Beauty is mercurial, difficult to identify, label or describe; perhaps enhanced by desire but certainly corrupted by fear. Does it depend on emotion for survival? A stormy sea is easily enjoyed from the comfort of a warm sitting room with a good meal and half a bottle of wine in your stomach. Shipwrecked starving mariners might not share that view. Are we guided by our instincts to those we find to be beautiful on grounds which are peculiar to us? Others may fall in love with people we perceive to be cosmetically plain individuals. Are we like climbers needing a sense of danger and insecurity to make risky mountains a beautiful challenge?
Integrity. Is it our trustworthiness or sense of honesty which earns this label? Is the word related to ‘integer’ which is the name given to any whole number. Does integrity imply wholeness as a person? Does safety with someone and complete trust give us an impression of integrity. Is it a case of how we feel about someone or what we know of their activities? Can we feel safe in one area but not in another? Or, is it something more basic and elusive, not dependant necessarily on one’s actions or the feelings which they inspire but rather the sense that the individual with integrity is open to the world and aware of his shortcomings.
Normality. Does such a thing exist? Abnormality disturbs, frightens or threatens many. Normality can be depressing for others who yearn for a change in their existence if only to bring an end to their boredom. Can we recognise boredom or uncertainty without the assistance of our innate feelings which give us a sense of either security or fear and vary with our environment? How can we feel so secure and strong that we can view each experience as being something wondrous and new giving our full intelligence and attention to its detail? Is it possible to do this or are we governed forever to make the same decisions about situations as we always have done. But given absolute freedom to have ourselves re-programmed, would we have the courage to do so? This is a crucial question since by doing so we would be committing ourselves to see the world differently and not necessarily as it is.
Gifts. What is a gift, something for nothing? Is a gift worth having if it is something which the giver could easily afford or not miss? Is a gift an opportunity to display righteousness since the giver’s friends, acquaintances or relatives will hear about it? Should all one’s gifts be anonymously given so we know we are doing it for the right reasons? Of course, it would be difficult to anonymously give your wife, friend, family members or lover a gift especially since the whole reason for the gift would be to make them feel good. But, giving also makes the giver feel good according to St Francis. Is there merit in giving gifts to people we dislike? It may be even more appropriate if we are looking for self-development.
